I wrote this document in the mid 80’s in Maryland and it was signed by the agents in my company, back when buyer agents were not allowed to use the lockbox, had no commission offered in MLS, and a number of companies wouldn’t let us show houses without the listing agent being present. We started an organization called Single Agency Realty Association (SARA, for short), and spent a good bit of time talking to legislators, brokers and agents about the rights of buyers to have their own agents. There was also a “Bill of Rights for Real Estate,” also ancient history. As we signed the scroll, we felt like we were being part of a revolution. There were eventually signatures from at least a few agents in every state.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all consumers are created equal, that they are endowed by fair play with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are … the right to purchase and sell property with the open and complete loyalty of a real estate professional, whether they are buyers or sellers. (We represent buyers, as well as sellers, but only one client in any transaction, and with written agreement and full disclosure.)
